Portrait of the Spanish sailor Cayetano Valdés (C.E.1767-1835), who became the XVII captain general of the Royal Spanish Navy. In C.E.1809 he was promoted to lieutenant general & was appointed captain general of Cadiz. The portrait was made in Seville in C.E.1847, on behalf of the Naval Museum of Madrid, & the one portrayed appears half-length and head-on, wearing the small uniform of Captain General & Director General of the Navy, & he wears the bands & plates of the great crosses of the orders of St. Ferdinand & St. Hermenegild & the veneration of knight of the Order of Malta. The painting entered the Naval Museum of Madrid in C.E.1847.
