General Note

Church of Scotland minister. Educated King's College, Aberdeen, M.A. 1725. Elected session clerk and precentor of Dornoch in Sutherland 1730. Licensed as a preacher Feb 1734, ordained as minister of Reay, Caithness Sept 1734. Petitioned the Court of Session to force the heritors of his parish to provide a school, 1773. Provided translation of "Orcades" for Charles Cordiner's Antiquities and Scenery of Northern Scotland, 1780 and an account of Strathnaver and Sutherland for Thomas Pennant's A Tour of Scotland. Died Reay, 1782.This book was presented to Alexander Pope, minister, by Alexander Pope, poet, his namesake. The minister Pope rode from Caithness to Twickenham on a pony in summer 1732 to visit the poet Pope. He was also presented with the poet's translation of Homer's Odyssey and a snuff-box.
