Variante(s) de prénom : Jacobus. - Libraire, éditeur et imprimeur. - Natif de Londres, fils d'un chirurgien-barbier, neveu par sa mère du libraire Matthew Walbancke. En apprentissage chez le libraire londonien Thomas Basset à partir de juin 1670. Admis dans la "Stationers' company" en déc. 1677, il s'établit en 1678. Important éditeur, lié à de nombreuses personnalités littéraires et politiques, il est secrétaire du Kit-Cat Club au début du XVIIIe siècle. En 1720, peu avant de se retirer dans sa propriété de Ledbury (Herefordshire), il obtient de l'administration un marché de 40 ans (fourniture de livres, papier, reliures et imprimés) pour lui-même et son neveu Jacob II Tonson (1682-1735), qui lui succède alors. Décédé en mars 1736
