General Note

John Stuart, third Earl of Bute. Succeeded to lands and titles 1723 under the guardianship of his uncles (Duke of Argyll, Earl of Ilay), attended Eton 1724-28, studied civil law at Leiden graduating 1732, elected Scottish representative peer 1737, Order of the Thistle 1738, Lord of the Bedchamber to Prince Frederick 1750, became tutor and principal advisor to the future George III, appointed to Privy Council 1760, Secretary of State 1761, Chancellor of Marischal College, 1761-92, first Lord of the Treasury [Prime Minister] 1762, resigned 9 April 1763, retired to villa in Hampshire 1771 and began collecting prints, books and scientific instruments, donated private scientific library of 1300 volumes to Marischal College in 1786, connected with the development of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Edinburgh and Kew.
