Solicitor and historian. Born Durham 1732. Educated probably Durham School. Served his articles as a solicitor. Set up practice at Barnard Castle, Co. Durham by 1760. Clerk to the lord lieutenancy of Durham. Published first literary works 1772, followed by other tales and plays. Published travel works 1774, 1776-8, history of Durham 1786, history of Cumberland 1794. Member of the Society of Antiquaries in London 1781. Died Barnard Castle, 1814.
