Archevêque d'York à 2 reprises (1141-1147 et 1153-1154). - Sa première élection est très contestée par les Cisterciens, qui finissent par obtenir sa révocation pour simonie de la main du pape Eugène III. - Rétabli par le pape Anastase IV, il meurt probablement de fièvre peu après son retour dans son archidiocèse, mais des rumeurs d'empoisonnement circulent. - Canonisé par le pape Honorius III en 1227
