Theologe und Missionar; Missionar der Basler Mission (am Basler Seminar ausgebildet) in Transkaukasien (damals Persien), dann in Zentralasien, daraufhin in Indien (in Agra und Peshawar) für den Church Missionary Society, schließlich noch in Konstantinopel; erlernte Tatarisch-Türkisch, Persisch und Armenisch; verfasste das apologetische christliche Werk "Mīzān al-ḥaqq" (deutsch, dann übersetzt in das Armenische, Persische u.a.)
