General Note

Imprimeur-libraire, graveur et fondeur de caractères ; éditeur de cartes et fabricant de globes. - Né à Wakefield (Yorkshire) ; fils de l'imprimeur puritain James I Moxon, émigré aux Provinces-Unies entre 1636 et 1646. Commence à exercer l'imprimerie à Londres à partir de sept. 1646, en association avec son frère aîné James II Moxon jusqu'en 1650. Membre de la Royal Society de nov. 1678 à nov. 1682 ; également hydrographe du roi d'Angleterre à partir de 1662. Auteur de plusieurs ouvrages techniques et scientifiques, et notamment des "Mechanick Exercises or the Doctrine of handy-works...", consacrés aux métiers manuels, dont le second volume (1683-1684) offre la première description détaillée du travail de l'imprimerie et de la fonderie de caractères. Se retire en 1686 ou peu après. Décédé à Londres ; sépulture le 15 fév. 1691
