Prélat et poète. - Maître ès-arts de l'université d'Oxford (1657). - Exerce diverses charges ecclésiastiques : chapelain du duc de Buckingham (1660), puis du roi Charles II (1676) ; jouit de prébendes à Westminster (1668) et Sainte-Marguerite (1679) ; évêque de Rochester (1684) ; commisssaire des affaires ecclésiastiques (1685). - Membre de la Société Royale de Londres (1663), dont il écrit l'histoire (1667). - Auteur de poésies, notamment sur Cowley, dont il est l'admirateur et imitateur. - Arrêté sous de fausses accusations (1692) puis relâché
