Érudit byzantin du XIIe s.. - Maître de rhétorique et de philosophie à Constantinople, il y enseigna aussi la médecine, tout en exerçant un ministère ecclésiastique à Sainte-Sophie. - Promu didascale des Évangiles, il fut ordonné métropolite de Philippopolis en 1142 (ou 1143, selon les sources). - Il mourut avant 1166. - De toute son oeuvre littéraire, il ne reste que 45 lettres et quelques discours d'apparat
