General Note

Graveur et fondeur de caractères et imprimeur. - Serait né en 1692 à Cradley (Worcestershire), fils d'un savetier de la localité voisine de Halesowen. Baptisé le 23 avril 1693, il pourrait donc aussi être né en 1693. En apprentissage à Londres chez un ouvrier en métaux à partir de mai 1706, il travaille ensuite à graver des ornements sur des armes, mousquets notamment. Encouragé par un groupe d'imprimeurs et libraires de Londres à graver des caractères typographiques, il se lance dans la fonderie vers 1722. Publie son premier spécimen de caractères en 1734. Devient le principal fournisseur des imprimeries de Grande-Bretagne et d'Amérique du Nord. Décédé à Bethnal-Green en janv. 1766. Son fils William II Caslon (1720-1778), associé à l'entreprise dès 1742 sous la raison "William Caslon and son", lui succède en 1766
