General Note

Henrik Keyser (II) bought his father’s printing house from his joint heirs after their mother’s death. He was a trained bookbinder, but not a printer, and he ran the printing house with the help of foremen for several years, until he, in spite of protests from the printers’ guild took over the business himself in the early 1670s. He trained as printer in Germany, and in 1674 he was approved as printer by his own journeymen. No foremen’s names appear in the imprints after 1673. He acquired a privilege as printer to the king in 1678, although another printer, Wankijf, was the main printer with royal privilege. Keyser was also an active publisher and even acquired a type foundry. He manufactured type for his own use but there’s no evidence that he sold anything to other printers. In 1685 he was contracted as printer to the university in Uppsala, although he did not print anything there until in late 1686. He provided the printing house in Uppsala with equipment of his own. The university cancelled his contract in 1694, and his son Henrik Keyser (III) was contracted in his place. The Keyser printing house in Stockholm was continued by his other heirs after his death.
