Scottish classical scholar, Latin grammarian, philologist, and poet. Baptised in the parish church of Aberdeen, 1580, eldest son of William Wedderburn, a burgess of Aberdeen. Some confusion as to where he completed his education, possibly Marischal Coll. or St Andrews. Master at the grammar school in Aberdeen April 1602, resigned to pursue a clerical vocation but returned 1603-40. Granted professorship at Marischal Coll., 1614-24, resigned to raise standards in the grammar school. Appointed humanist at King's Coll., 1619. Poet laureate of Aberdeen, and awarded freedom of the city, 1620. Composed many Latin poems but best known for his work Short Introduction to Grammar, first published 1632, which became a standard text in grammar schools in Scotland. Also produced his Institutiones grammaticae and Vocabula. Given freedom of Dundee 1632. Died Aberdeen, 1646.
