Bernhard von Horstmar nahm am dritten Kreuzzug unter König Richard Löwenherz, König von England, teil, rettete in der Schlacht bei Bouvines 1214 Kaiser Otto IV. von Braunschweig das Leben und starb 1227 in Coevorden bei der Unterstützung des Bischofs von Utrecht (Otto III.) gegen Rudolf II. von Coevorden.
