Burgess in right of father Henry Elder weaver 2 November 1786; Member of the Edinburgh Bookseller's Society 31 March 1787. Guild Brother 13 April 1797; Married Elizabeth daughter of William Cleghorn bookbinder 22 September 1789. Agent for the Cheap Repository Tracts. Indicted for publishing “The declaration of the rights of man by the National Assembly” September 1792. Apprentice: Joseph Clark 29 November 1789. Menzies Bain and Robert Elder clerks or shopmen 1792, witnesses in his trial for sedition. Indictment NLS L.C.1133(5)
