Peintre, graveur et imprimeur en taille-douce. - Natif de Reading. Fils de Robert I Havell, graveur et imprimeur à Londres. Travaille en association avec son père de 1818 à 1828. En 1829, Robert II Havell s'établit à son compte ; à la mort de son père, en 1832, il continue la publication, commencée par celui-ci, des 435 planches gravées d'après l'ouvrage de John James Audubon, "The Birds of America". À l'invitation d'Audubon il quitte l'Angleterre en 1839 pour s'installer aux États-Unis où, tout en exerçant la gravure, il commence une nouvelle carrière de peintre de paysages
