Betrieb von 1523 bis zu seinem Tod 1584 eine Druckerei in Wittenberg, in der bis 1546 90 Schriften bzw. Übersetzungen von Schriften Luthers herauskamen; daneben betrieb er einen Weinschank und betätigte sich vielfach auch als Buchhändler. Wurde 1549 von Herzog Albrecht von Preußen zur Errichtung einer Druckerei nach Königsberg berufen und erhielt das erste preußische Druckprivileg; diese Presse, die Luffts Schwiegersohn Aurifaber leitete, ging 1553 wieder ein.
Variante(s) de prénom : Hanns ; Johann. Imprimeur-libraire. Vraisemblablement originaire d'Amberg (Palatinat), il s'établit à Wittenberg en 1522. Publications connues à partir de 1523. Principal imprimeur de Martin Luther à Wittenberg à partir de 1524. Membre du conseil de la ville à partir de 1542, il y exerce régulièrement en qualité de bourgmestre. Invité par le duc Albert de Prusse (dont le gendre de Hans Lufft, Andreas Aurifaber, est le médecin personnel) à s'établir également à Königsberg, il y tient une imprimerie entre 1549 et 1553 et y obtient le premier privilège d'impression du duché de Prusse. Dit âgé de 89 ans lors de son décès (sept. 1584).
Drukarz dzieł M. Lutra, działający w Wittenberdze w. l. 1523-1584. W okresie 1549-1553 prowadził też drukarnię w Królewcu, którą zarządzał jego zięć Andreas Aurifaber. Po śmierci córki Luffta (sierpień 1549) zięć nadal nią zarządzał. Od początku działalności tłoczni publikacje firmują "dziedzice Jana Luffta"(officina haeredum Joannis Lufftii). Od stycznia 1550 do firmy wprowadzono dodatek "in Academia Regiomontana". Lufft utrzymywał filię w Królewcu do 1554 r.
