Commentateur de l'oeuvre de William Shakespeare
Literary editor and scholar, commentator on the work of Shakespeare. Born London 1736. Educated Eton College, fellow-commoner of King's College, Cambridge 1753-6, but left without taking a degree. Settled in London 1756. Helped Samuel Johnson with his edition of Shakespeare, published 1765. Published his own edition of Shakespeare 1766. Fellow of the Royal Society and of the Society of Antiquaries 1767. Published another edition of Shakespeare 1793. Chiefly remembered for his hoaxes and attacks on his contemporaries, but praised for his generosity. Died Hampstead 1800. His considerable library was auctioned in 1800, in 1943 lots.
