General Note
Historian of Cheshire. Born in Manchester. Educated King's School, Chester 1798-9, tutored by Revd Thomas Bancroft 1799-1803. Matriculated Brasenose College, Oxford 1803, B.A. 1806, honorary M.A.1807. Elected F.S.A in 1809. Began work on his history of Cheshire 1809. Bought Chorlton House, Cheshire, 1811. History of Cheshire published in ten parts 1816-9. Honorary D.C.L., Oxford, 1818. F.R.S in 1819. Sold Chorlton House 1823. Became proprietor of Sedbury Park, Glos., on the peninsula of Beachley, between the Severn and the Wye, 1825. JP for Gloucestershire 1827, Monmouthshire 1830. Deputy lieutenant for Gloucestershire 1861. Died at Sedbury Park 1873. His library was sold in 1875.
