Lettré, humaniste et philologue byzantin ; issu d'une famille aristocratique apparentée à la dynastie impériale des Paléologues. - Envoyé de l'empereur Manuel II Paléologue, à Rome auprès du pape (en 1391), puis en Angleterre et à Paris (en 1408). - Partisan de l'union avec les Latins et de la réconciliation des Églises ; fait cardinal par l'antipape Jean XXIII au concile de Constance. - Précurseur des études grecques en Italie ; enseigna le grec à Venise, Florence, Milan et Pavie. - Auteur d'une grammaire du grec ancien et traducteur de "La république" de Platon, ainsi que d'autres oeuvres classiques grecques, en latin. - Inhumé le 15 avril 1415 au couvent des Dominicains de Constance. - 2 formes latines : Manuel Chrysoloras (génitif = Manuelis Chrysolorae), homographe au nominatif de la forme française ; Emmanuel Chrysoloras (génitif = Emmanuelis Chrysolorae)
