Welcker interessierte sich auch für Ethnologie, so forschte er zur künstlichen Verkrüppelung der Füße von Chinesinnen und untersuchte anhand einer Mumie das altägyptische Beschneidungsritual. Außerdem veröffentlichte er eine Sammlung mit Dialektgedichten und zerstörte gemeinsam mit dem Historiker Theodor Lindner die Legende von dem sitzenden Leichnam Karls des Großen
