Groningen, Delfzijl, Leeuwarden) verbleef); Mandeville studeerde vanaf 1686 geneeskunde te Leiden en promoveerde in 1691 aldaar; vertrok in 1693 naar Engeland, bleef daar definitief maar behield de Nederlandse nationaliteit; specialiseerde zich in 'hypochondrische- en hysterische ziekten' (zodat hij de eerste moderne psychiater werd)
bron Arne C. Jansen: titel van het proefschrift (d.d. 30-03-1691) van Mandeville, is dezelfde als die van Anglicaans predikant en geneesheer, Thomas Colton (1658-1731), die ook in Leiden op 29 juni 1691 promoveerde: "Disputation medica inauguralis De chylosi vitiata"
