baron, koloniaal ambtenaar, jurist (op zijn dissertatie staat als naam vermeld, in het Latijn: Gustavus Guilielmus van Imhoff; in het Duits, was zijn naam: Gustav Wilhelm von Imhoff); van 1736-1740: gouverneur van Ceylon; van 1743-1750: gouverneur-generaal van Nederlands Oost-Indië (als opvolger van Johannes Thedens, van 1741-1743); Van Imhoff stichtte Buitenzorg (West-Java; thans: Bogor) in 1745 als buitenverblijf; oprichter van de handelsmaatschappij 'Amfioen (=opium) Sociëteit' (onder de vleugels van de VOC), bestaan van 1745-1794
geb. te Leer (Ost-Friesland), als Oost-Friese edelman; zoon van Wilhelm Hinrich#Freiherr#von Imhoff en zijn moeder was een dochter van de Amsterdamse burgemeester Jacob Boreel (1630-1697); Van Imhoff (sr.) was vanaf 1725 te Batavia aangekomen, waar hij tenslotte in 1750 overleed
van 1727-1744, echtgenoot van: Catharina Magdalena Huijsman (-1744)
vervolgens levenspartner van een inlandse vrouw: Helena Pieters
