General Note

Art and plant collector. Only child of George Peter Holford and his wife Anne. Graduated BA from Oriel College, Oxford, in 1829. In 1838 he inherited £1 million from his uncle, Robert Holford. Although he did serve in Parliament his earliest zeal was for collecting and landscape gardening. His son, Sir George Holford inherited the collections. Having no interest in them he sold a large portion privately to A.S.W. Rosenbach in 1925, and the remainder was sold at auction in 1927, following George’s death in 1926.
