Englischer Maschinenbauingenieur; 1841 als Mitglied in die Institution of Civil Engineers gewählt; Ausbildung bei Dr. Greenlaw in Isleworth, an der St. Paul's School und an der Universität von Edinburgh; in seiner späteren Manufaktur in der Holland Street wurden u.a. die erste Biscuit-Maschine, Korn- und Schokoladen-Mühlen, Lokomotiven für die London und Croydon Railway konstruiert, sowie die erste Propeller-betriebene Dampfmaschine der Welt; 1840 baute die Firma das erste Schiff der British Navy, welches von einer Schiffschraube angetrieben wurde
