In Dresden tätig, baute mit seinem Vater Johann Gottfried 1806 ein Belloneon, 1808 einen Trompetenautomaten, es folgten das Trompeten- und Paukenwerk, das Chordalaudion, 1809 das Harmonichord und 1839 das Symphonion (von seinem Sohn Friedrich Theodor zum Orchestrion weiterentwickelt), verlor während eines Seesturmes auf der Überfahrt von England fast alle seine Instrumente, Carl Maria von Weber komponierte für ihn Adagio und Rondo für Harmonichord und Orchester (JV 115), das Kaufmann lange Zeit auf seinen Reisen als Paradestück präsentierte
