Self-portrait of Katherine (ou Catherine) Read. woman. The work has been recognized as alluding to Maurice Quentin de La Tour's self-portrait known as L'homme qui rit, or Autoportrait à l'index (original exhibited at the Salon of 1737. She has retained La Tour's conventional yet ambiguous framing of the figure in an oval.
