General Note

Book collector and patron of the arts, probably born in 1673 or 1674 (when he died in Venice he was said to be ninety-six). He used a coat of arms of the family of Smith of Essex and Suffolk although he never established his right to it. He went to Venice in 1700 as a partner in the merchant banking house of Thomas Williams. He then headed the firm. He was appointed British consul in Venice in 1744. Music lover, he was a serious book collector, with a commercial element involved in his attitude. In 1724 a first catalogue of his collection was published in Padua; a second catalogue was issued in 1737 and in 1755 a third catalogue was published together with the edition of several prefaces from incunabula, which was used as a reference tools by many collectors. A copy of this catalogue (Bibliotheca Smithiana, Venice: G.B. Pasquali, 1755) was used by the librarian of King George III, when he acquired Smith's collection as a starting point of a new Royal Library (1762-63). See 'Bibliotheca Smithiana: a catalogue of the curious, elegant, and very valuable library of Joseph Smith ...' London: Baker & Leigh, 1773
