Libraire et éditeur de cartes géographiques. - Né à Mansfield (Nottinghamshire), fils d'un maître d'école de cette ville. D'abord placé à 14 ans comme laquais. Poète et auteur dramatique. Se serait établi libraire à Londres avec l'aide du poète Alexander Pope en 1735. Publie sous plusieurs pseudonymes. En 1739, emprisonné une semaine pour la publication d'un pamphlet critique vis-à-vis de plusieurs lords de la Chambre. Fonde et publie plusieurs périodiques dont "The Museum" et "The Annual Register". Décédé lors d'un déplacement à Durham en sept. 1764
