General Note

Playwright and translator. Baptised 1560, London. Parents had died by 1571. Studied with Claudius Hollyband. Apprentice printer 1576, signed binding term til 1585, but abandoned apprenticeship 1578 to travel in Europe. Wrote an account of the English College in Rome. Returned 1579. Began literary career on his return - includes prose, poetry, civic pageants and many plays. Actor by early 1580s. Intelligencer for various people in the 1580s and 90s, including the Bishop of London and Queen Elizabeth I. Translated numerous French, Spanish and Italian texts in the late 1580s and early 1590s. May have collaborated with Shakespeare on The Book of Sir Thomas More. Died Aug 1633.
