Général hongrois. Officier de la Garde jusqu'en 1845, il organise en 1848 la garde nationale (Honvéd) à l'ouest de la Tisza, puis prend le commandement de l'armée du Nord. De mai à juillet 1849, ministre de la guerre et commandant en chef, il reprend Buda le 21 mai 1849, mais doit capituler le 13 août 1849, à Vilagós, devant une armée russe venue au secours des Habsbourg. En résidence surveillée de 1849 à 1867 à Klagenfurt, Autriche. Auteur de mémoires pour justifier sa conduite contre les accusations de trahison. Frère du juriste Görgey István (1825- 1912).
