Saint Francis Solanus. South American missionary of the Franciscan Order; born at Montilla, Cordova, Spain, in 1549; died at Lima, Peru, in 1610. His missionary works in South America extended over a period of twenty years, during which time he evangelized the vast regions of Tucuman and Paraguay. Later he was called by his superiors to Lima, where he died among general sorrow.
