Travaille en association avec Thomas Platter, Balthasar Rauch et Ruprecht Winter de 1536 à 1541, puis quelque temps avec Ruprecht Winter seul
Variante(s) de prénom : Joannes. - Imprimeur-libraire. - Humaniste. Fils du peintre Hans Herbst ou Herbster. A été employé chez l'imprimeur-libraire de Bâle Johann Froben, et professeur de grec et de rhétorique à l'université de la ville. En 1536, rachète l'imprimerie d'Andreas Cratander, en association avec Thomas Platter, Balthasar Rauch et Ruprecht Winter. Est emprisonné quelque temps pour l'impression de la traduction latine du Coran faite par Theodorus Bibliander, pour laquelle il obtient l'"imprimatur" en 1543, mais l'ouvrage demeure interdit de vente à Bâle. En 1565, veuf, il épouse en troisièmes noces la veuve de l'imprimeur-libraire Johann Herwagen. Également auteur et commentateur d'un grand nombre d'ouvrages. Mort du typhus en juillet 1568

1526 Lehrer an der Leonhardschule in Basel und Korrektor bei Johann Froben, ging Mitte der 30er Jahre mit Thomas Platter, Balthasar Lasius und Robert Winter eine Druckergemeinschaft ein, die sich aber bald wieder auflöste. Seit 1540 brachte er einige Werke zusammen mit Nikolaus Brylinger heraus. Ließ auch außerhalb von Basel drucken. Ende 1567 verkaufte er seine Druckerei an die Brüder Hieronymus und Polykarp Gemusäus und an Balthasar Han, die sie meist unter der alten Firmenbezeichnung bis um 1600 weiterführten; Prof. für Latein und Griechisch an der Universität Basel
