Nach dem Tode seines Bruders Johann (1806) erlernte er den Buchhandel und Buchdruck, trat 1807 in die von seiner Mutter (nach dem Tode des Vaters) geführte Firma ein und übernahm sie 1813 vollständig. Ab 1843 waren seine Söhne Friedrich und Moritz Teilhaber (Carl Gerold & Sohn)
